A vehicle bill of sale documents the sale and helps with registration and taxes. It works alongside the title, not in place of it.
What to include
- Buyer and seller names and addresses.
- Vehicle make, model, year and VIN.
- Odometer reading.
- Sale price and date.
- Statement of condition, such as "as is," and any warranties.
- Signatures of both parties.
Title transfer
The seller signs over the title, and the buyer submits it with the bill of sale to the state motor vehicle agency to register the vehicle. Federal law requires an odometer disclosure on transfer for many vehicles. Some states require notarization or specific forms.
Seller tips
