Deadlines to file a lawsuit in North Dakota

The deadline to file a personal injury lawsuit in North Dakota is generally 6 years, which is longer than the most common period of 2 years across the country (N.D. Cent. Code § 28-01-16, 28-01-18). For a written contract the period is 6 years and for an oral contract 6 years.

Deadlines can start later or pause in some situations, and claims against government bodies often have much shorter notice periods. See what a statute of limitations is and what to do after a car accident.

Security deposits in North Dakota

Landlords in North Dakota must return a tenant's security deposit within about 30 days (30 days; § 47-16-07.1). Missing the deadline can cost a landlord the right to keep deductions, and some states add penalties.
